Probably our last activity with racing
buddies as we celebrated Doug Crampton's 3rd annual party.
Plans are in the process for next season's
run. If I had knowledge of what really goes through the Master
Fabricator's mind I'd report them, but until he has definite
answers I'll keep mum.

The guys just can't get enough and had
to try their luck one more time in Donnellson Iowa. Out of 40
cars we made the show and the ZR71 looked like she might show
really well. First lap in the feature and we were knocked out
of the race. Big damage to the car and the end of the racing
season.

Peoria for the last night of racing!
Also last chance parties for Rick Ratliff and Donna Miller before
they tie the knot next Saturday. The girls went to the Rainbow
District in Davenport for partying pleasure and the guys went
to Peoria for Rick's big bash. Jim qualified for the feature,
but before he could run the show rain poured down on the guys.
What happened after that...who knows!
Feature racing began on Sunday and we
pulled in just in time to prepare. Jim started 8th and ended
with an 8th. Not much passing in the race and when there was
a restart and you were on the outside you could pretty much
bet you would lose position.

Big show tonight as over 40 cars showed
up for a chance at qualifying at Davenport Speedway. Wouldn't
you know it we managed to get a flat tire in the first lap of
the heat race. This put us in the consi in the last row. Not
good! Jim did great tho as he moved forward to capture a 5th.
However, first and second place were all they were taking for
tonight's race.

Rain, rain, rain. We'd hope we'd get
to run one more night before the end of the season, but rain
ruined our plans.
However, Jim was probably not too disappointed
as he went to Minnesota for the weekend for a big show. Jim
ran in the A50 car, Adam Mitchell's, and from what I understand
he had a weekend to be proud of. He made all the shows and brought
home a nice big purse for Adam. Way to go A50 and Jim Sandusky!!
Ron Weedon's 500th win celebration was
a great bash and we had a good time on Friday night. Kevin Saunders
put a past and current video together as a gift for Ronnie and
it was a pleasure to watch. Jeff Walker made a trophy case for
the Weedon's and it was a gift that Ronnie and Dee were very
proud of. It certainly makes me realize that we need to keep
all of the harnesses, helmets, etc. because over a 50 year span
things sure do change.

Jackson County Speedway was probably
Rick's last race for the year. A bigger show tonight that usual
as we had street stock races for a feature win of $1,000. Approximately
47 cars showed up for that show and the open wheel had 23 cars,
much larger than most nights.
Feature had us drawing a 2nd for the
starting position since Rick placed 4th in his heat. It was
a good run tonight with a few cautions and restarts. The car
came out clean without a scratch and ready for tomorrow night's
race. We did fall back because we would get caught on the high
side which was not the place to be tonight. Rick ended with
a 7th place finish, with probably half the cars not finishing
by night's end. Good job, Rick.
Planning on attending the big race on
the 27th, but as far as I know the car will have another driver.

One of our last nights at EMS for the
season with $600 going to the feature winner. Jim ended with
a 2nd place finish in the heat race so our place in the feature
gave us a better chance at the draw. Jim drew a 6th place start
for the finish and the races began. The car was running great
and we moved up to 4th, 2nd, and first. Jim would end move forward
with about 8 car links between him and the 2nd place runner,
but it didn't last long enough. There would be a caution and
we would restart. Rounding turn 4 Jim spun out with no room
in sight for other cars to dodge him. We ended with a flat tire
and was taken off the track on the hook with a few laps to go.
Next week is the last night of Sunday
racing. I hope we can finish that one without any damage to
the car. Looking forward to Friday and helping Ronnie Weedon
celebrate his 500th win celebration.

A different venue for me!! We traveled
to Farley for a big show. Tonight it was just Jim, Cindy, Cassie,
Michael, Mike, and me. It had been raining all day here in town,
but Farley said come on up...and we did. We took Jim's coach
and the truck and settled in the infield for the duration of
what was suppose to be the weekend. Lot's of cars competing
and we were just crossing our fingers that we might make it.
Jim looked good for a short time, but the ZR71 was smokin like
a big dog and finally was black flagged into the pits. Our mood
sunk to its lowest as we were sure the engine had finally said
her farewells. Perseverance helps and we continued with positive
thoughts eventually discovering we had a bad intake gasket.
Time for a quick recovery to make it in the consi. Even the
girls were allowed to take part in rebuilding (since there was
no one else to rely on). We all did a great job and had the
motor back in one piece. We had a little trouble finding the
mark for the distributor cap to get the timing in sequence but
we thought we had it nailed. Consi time came and our girl moved
up quickly, but fell back just as quickly. The car was missing
and the old girl just couldn't perform. Back to the infield
we go planning on preparing her for tomorrow's last chance race.
Rain came down hard all night and Saturday
the races were cancelled. The infield was ankle deep in mud
and we waited and waited for the rain to subside. No such luck,
but packing up and getting out would be another story. Mike
would end up bringing his truck down and helping a few coaches
and trailers out. With a little urging from Cindy and her dramatic
statements it would finally be us to try our luck, and needless
to say the coach made it out first time and so did the car and
trailer. Lots of not so funny things happened this weekend,
but when I look back it is a memory we will have for a lifetime.
Between Mike's sudden illness (ha ha) and my attack I'm sure
Cassie will never forget the Zemo's. I have to admit it was
kinda fun and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Last heard
the race would possibly be rescheduled for the 27th.

30 lapper and $600 to win tonight. We
started the feature in 9th and early on Jim moved up to a 5th.
Oh well, a tie rod breaks and we are off the track for repairs.
Back on the track we have to go to the back and try to move
up. Say good-bye to the hopes of a win. Lots of cautions tonight
and lots of spin-outs. The car kept moving up and made its way
towards the front, eventually running side by side with Ronnie.
Ronnie was looking great tonight and his car was screaming on
the low side in the corners. He and Jim would battle back and
forth the remainder of the evening trying to pass the 79 car.
30 laps were up and the 79 won the show, Ronnie in second, and
Jim in third.
Come checkered flag time we would find
out Jim and Ronnie were battling against Troy Emerick for the
win. Good job Troy on your feature win!

Jackson County Speedway had a special
trailer race tonight and did the Fans show up!! The house was
packed with a $5 admission and children free.
Due to the added shows Rick would not
be able to run a heat race and we only had the feature to look
forward to. A little late in arriving gave us a 10th position
out of 12 cars. The ride was good tonight and Rick showed well
on the track. He would have a spin out that would place him
at the back of the pack, but he managed to move back up and
ended with a 6th place finish.
Mechanics races were also on the schedule
tonight. Longtime friend, mechanic, and supporter of the ZR71,
Dave "Dog Dog" Groene, was our designated driver for
tonight's special event. Way back in our teen years Dave was
the "gear head" of the group and he could do amazing
things on the streets and in parking lots, so it was a pleasure
to get him out on the track. He was an ace in the seat and we
all had a good time rooting him on. Dave, thanks for all you
do and especially the generosity you have shown by offering
the trailer that transports the ZR71. (Dave dipped into his
vacation fund to buy the trailer)

Tonight was probably Michael's last night
at Davenport Speedway and if he gets more seat-time it will
probably be at other tracks for the remainder of the season.
He finally got a front row spot for the
heat race although it didn't last long. He started up front
with Crampton Dominacki and Ray Cox Jr. Aiyiyiee!! It was exciting
to watch and before you knew it Dominacki had slid up on the
outside and passed him. Is this so bad, no. I figure if he is
running behind the big boys he can learn a lot from following
them (although what comes easy for Bob will take a lot more
practice from Michael). A few laps later we would have Ray Cox
Jr. playing with Michael in turns 3 and 4, but Michael recovered
nicely and kept in front for one or two more laps. Ray would
pass him, but again, there is enough distance between Michael
and the 5th place driver that he can get a feel for the track
and also see how Ray runs his line. He followed Dominacki, Crampton,
and Cox Jr. to end with a 4th place finish. Considering the
contenders I thought we had an excellent race. 27 cars showed
at Davenport tonight for the open wheel competition.
Feature time!! Michael finally draws
a 6th place start for this one. We have Dominacki, Crampton,
Bull, Cox Jr. and Veloz all ahead of him and great drivers behind
him. With the gear and the set-up Dad later admits he did his
son wrong, but son says it was all his fault...who knows, but
Michael ended up being way too tight at the start of the race
and he swung up and around in 3 and 4 and caused quite a melee
on the track. It is clear that Michael, Mike and I are all heartsick
that we have just done damage to Jim Willert and Casey Schram.
If there were others we apologize. It's easier to take being
the one done to, than the one doing the damage...so folks, I'm
sorry. We would continue the race from the back and Michael
would run the rest of the night without incident and acclimated
himself to the tight set-up. Michael ended with an 11th and
special thanks to Jim Willert for being more than kind.

Congratulations
Rick on your second heat win at Jackson County Speedway!!
|
Fifteen open wheels showed for tonight's
season championship.
Rick started his heat race front row
outside and took his second heat win of the season!! Great job,
Rick.
Feature line-up tonight was based on
season points for the year and Rick was placed in 7th, since
he ended the season with a a 7th place finish. Not bad for the
rookie driver. Racing was pretty competitive and every driver
was fighting for a position up front. Rick ended the season
with a 12th place finish and his first plaque to take home and
place on the mantle.
Bob Dominacki, season points leader also
won the feature tonight. Zemo Motorsport extends a high-five
to Bob on a great season of racing.
FYI - Congratulations Jim Sandusky on
a 3rd place finish at the Bud Shootout on Labor Day. Jim ran
in the A1, Gary Bruington car.

Woo-Hoo, what a night of racing!! Thanks
to sponsors, Dick Banks, Banks Plastering and Drywall and Ken
Werner, Werner Construction for coming tonight and seeing what
that little 500 h.p. motor can do with the big boys.
Jim started his heat race towards the
back and moved to the front for a win. Good deal. Later we would
draw a 4th starting position for the feature. Things were looking
up and we were hoping to keep Jim and the ZR71 as points leader.
First lap down and the car breaks, Jim drives off the track,
and we all wait to see if he can make it back on the track in
time. Kudos to the crew who managed to have a tie-rod replaced
as the cars were lining up for the restart. As the pack begin
there move to start the race Jim reappeared. He may have been
placed at the back of the pack (18th), but that's racing and
it would prove to be an exceptional night for us. Jim makes
it look so easy to move forward, although I know it's not, and
he and the car just work wonders at the EMS. Of course, we moved
up even further than I had expected and by the end of the race
Jim was running neck and neck with the race winner. We got 2nd,
but it felt like we had won with the great racing that took
place tonight.
Congratulations to feature winner Milo
Veloz!! You and Jim put on a clean show tonight and it was fun
watching you guys battle it out for the checkered flag. Next
week is a $600 to win show and I can't wait.

Fourteen cars showed up tonight for the
open wheel class. You can tell the year is coming to a close
and there aren't as many drivers attending.
The car looked really good tonight and
Rick qualified 5th in his heat race. He was placed in the first
row outside for the feature. Sounds like the perfect opportunity
to run up front and keep our position, but the track was only
one lane tonight and it just so happened it was the bottom of
the track. Everyone knew it and it was difficult to move on
the top which made it harder to get your nose down on the bottom
line to keep your position. A few cars would drop out before
the checkered flag waved but Rick stayed on the track with no
errors or bobbles and placed 9th. At times Rick said there was
a very small window of opportunity to possibly nudge down low
and try and gain position, but out of respect for the car and
the possibility of a couple hundred bucks in tires and such
he decided he preferred to stay safe this close to the end of
the season. He said if it were his car and his money he would
have taken the chance, but we have a few more races until the
end of the season and he wanted the car in tip-top condition.
Rick accomplished his goal of keeping the ZR71 primed and ready
for Sunday night racing. The only thing the crew will have to
do is tighten a few bolts and we'll be ready for the EMS. Elmo
has already predicted that he is wearing his lucky shirt on
Sunday to bring Jim back to a checkered flag win. With that
kind of attitude anything is possible...so wear your lucky shirt
MO!!
Congratulations Bob Dominacki on another
win.

Michael receives
the Rookie of the Year Award at Davenport Speedway
|
Michael receives a totally unexpected
Rookie of the Year award!!
Our racing tonight was not one of the
best with 24 cars on the field and numerous wrecks and spin-outs.
Michael checked up for a car in turns 3 and 4 and ended up with
his tail tapped, which caused him to spin. Back of the pack
and around we go again. Later Dave Hammond would spin out causing
a pile up in turns 1 and 2 which put Michael into #24D, Daron
Oberbroeckling's door. Michael said for one moment he wanted
to hop out of the car and check on Daron until he saw he was
okay. Daron did get out of the car with no injuries as far as
we could tell, but his car was pulled off on the hook. The ZR71
ended with a 15th place finish and I know Michael was a little
heavy hearted he couldn't have done better (his heat race was
a set-back). HOWEVER, he would eventually have one big grin
on his face.
As I'm watching the top 10 drivers of
each class receive their awards, Shane Davis mentioned Michael
needed to make his way to the infield. Cool...I wasn't sure
why (rookie or sportsman?), but I went to the pits to give Michael
the news. He hasn't a clue, and neither does any of the crew,
and he is sitting off by himself watching his feature race to
learn from the good points and bad. He is sort of in a daze
as I tell him to get out on the infield, because he has no idea
what is happening. The Rookie of the Year award was awaiting
him....and after he accepted his trophy he looked at me with
his amazing grin. One moment you can feel like you can never
reach your goals, and in the next moment you are given credit
for something you never expected. As I tell Michael, hard knocks
can only make you better and if you stay focused it will come.
Fastlane Legends had a raffle offering
a Legends Car at $20 a chance. I decided to go on the theory
of the 66 late model car owner who won the Randy Wages quilt.
He waited to the last minute and bought the winning ticket.
Well, I figured what the heck, I'll try playing the game the
same way and if we win that Legend Car, Michael will finally
get the seat-time he has been wishing for (three different drivers
in one car doesn't give a guy much of an opportunity to learn).
I didn't win the Legend, but we did win the Simpson racing suit.
Thank you to the 66 Car Owner for making me believe I should
take a chance on blowing my $20!! Chris Springer, I wish you
had won the Legend...I'd like to see you and your family at
the track next year...you are a driver to be reckoned with.
Congratulations to Rob Toland and John
Bull on their season championships!! And a special thanks to
those who gave Michael a memory that will last a lifetime.

During the heat race Jim had just a little
trouble with the car as the tie rod broke and we were off the
track before the heat race finished. From my place in the stands
turn 3 and 4 came awfully close to being hit once he lost control,
but slowly we edged back down.
The feature placed us in 18th and Jim
was gonna have to show his driving skills tonight. Of course
he did. He moved forward car by car, looked good in the corners,
and just bided his time to see if he should take the high-side
or the low side to take on the next guy. We ended the race with
a 6th place finish.
Congratulations to Marty Thompson for
the feature win.
Hello Jessica!! Miss you and
hope you'll be in town next week to see Michael's last race.
We love you!!

I heard racing was very interesting tonight
and there were quite a few wrecks throughout the night. Seems
the ZR71 was never in the vicinity of the wrecks so we came
out clean. Little fiasco in the pits as the ZR71 arrived to
find its spot was taken and Mike had to pit in the field past
turns 1 and 2. He told me it was his worst night ever as a tire
broke off its axle during the race(rim included) and flew down
past the pit crew, bouncing off the trailer, and going over
the fence. All the guys were lucky enough to have it pass by
closely, but it bothered him that he could have had something
on his conscience for the rest of his life.
The feature started Rick in 12th place
and as mentioned there was a lot of goings on throughout the
night. So we might have been safe to be in the back. I believe
Mike said only 15 cars showed up for tonight's show. The race
ended with Rick finishing 10th.
Congratulations Bob Dominacki on another
win.

What a hot steamy night it was. Grandma
Merritt came to watch Michael on one of the hottest nights of
the season and we were glad she could make it before the year
ends.
Michael didn't do so hot in the heat.
We had the car set-up wrong for the track and he did not qualify.
Since there were more than cars than usual we ran a consi and
managed to qualify at that time.
Dad had made the required changes to
the car by feature time and Michael performed much better. We'd
move up and then there would be a restart and they'd put us
back. He'd pass cars on the back stretch and then there would
be a restart. A guy spun out in front of him and there was a
restart (although the guy in front of him got his position back,
so I can never figure out what track has what rules). We never
did manage to move up very much. Michael started in the back
and ended with a 15th.
Tonight was a very special evening for
Ronnie Weedon as he captured his 500th feature win at Davenport
Speedway. Fortunately this was recorded and should be televised
on Rock Island mediacom. It you get a chance check out the TV
guide and watch Ronnie take his 500 victory. The event should
be televised many times during the week.

When Jim is in the car it seems that's
when our expectations are always higher. This puts alot of pressure
on the driver and is a little unfair. The expectation of always
ending up front would take the enjoyment out of going to the
races. All of the drivers try their best and baby the ZR71.
So to be negative is just not my bag.
The feature started us in third position
and that certainly is not a bad start. The lead positions were
all held by excellent drivers so there would be some competition
on the track tonight. As happened both Friday and Saturday the
driver spun out and we were moved to the back. No matter, as
racing was as good as it gets. Jim ended the feature with a
13th place, safe, and with the car in one piece and ready for
some needed TLC.
Ronnie Weedon took his 499th win tonight.
As the Sunday before, the fans were all supportive of
this racing wonder!! Way to go Ronnie.

Today is when we discovered that the
steering pin had broke and Mike discovered he could bend in
ways he didn't know existed. Remember this guy is no spring
chicken. The car was fixed and come Monday changes will be made
to ensure safety for the drivers.
Rick's feature was excellent as he started
in the second row. He moved up quickly and took the lead position.
Woo-hoo, we can't ask for anything better. Like Michael he was
tagged and spun out by another driver on the bottom. The race
was restarted and our position did not last. We did fall back,
but only to a seventh place finish. During the feature, Rick
was hit, nudged, and bumped (but recovered) about 3 times. We
can't complain about his driving abilities, we finished with
a good run and Rick held his own tonight.
Congratulations Jim Willert on the feature
win.

Back to Davenport for an exciting night
of racing
Michael always exhibits a positive attitude
and he very rarely complains or tries to blame others. I like
this attribute in my son, and to end up becoming a better driver
like the veterans he runs with is how he learns from the errors
that occur on the track. For the first few laps he had my heart
pumping as he took second position in the heat race. He is running
against the big boys and part of me wishes he weren't there,
but glad he is because this is the goal he sets for himself.
As luck always runs in most instances he was running in turns
3 and 4 when he was spun out as a driver ran below him, swung
his rear end up, and spun the ZR71 out. To the back of the pack
we go, but only experience will make Michael a better driver.
The feature placed him with a 14th starting
position and there was alot of action on the track tonight.
No dings, dents, or errors on Michael's part and he moved up
to a 12th finish. His run was excellent tonight as he focused
on the bottom of the track. We are still having difficulties
with the steering and will discover that the steering pin had
once again broke. Congratulation Michael on hanging in there
to finish the race.
Congratulations Ray Cox Jr. on another
win!!

At home it was raining hard, but Mike
said the skies were clear at EMS so we were on for tonight!!
A great night of racing as Jim placed
2nd in the heat and started the feature in 4th. Tonight again
was racing that had the front runners doing so well, you didn't
know who would take the checkered flag. With 6 laps to go Doug
Crampton spun out in turn 4 which always disappoints me because
you want to see the contenders compete with each other when
they all have excellent cars. Jim ended the race with a 3rd
place finish and we are happy to say that Ronnie Weedon took
the checkered flag for his 498th career win. The stands were
filled with cheers from one end to the other. Zemo Motorsports
of course wants to offer their congratulations to this veteran
driver.
Thank you Jim and other drivers who offered
their congratulations at Ronnie's win. It is nice to see the
camaraderie the drivers have for each other when the race is
over.
Welcome back Jason Veloz who hit the
track for the first time tonight. Jason may have been gone all
year, but he netted a 4th place finish.

The car is starting to show its effectiveness
with all three drivers!!
Tonight Rick's heat looked great. He
was in the hottest round tonight with some big players. We ended
with a 4th place finish which gave us a 3rd position for the
feature. Not bad!
The feature was fun the first few laps
as Rick gained 1st position in the beginning of the race. You
can imagine our delight. As he rounded turns one and 2 he was
taken out accidentally by another driver and was placed in the
back. The car and Rick continued to look good as Rick inched
his way back to the front. He managed to go from 18th to a 7th
place finish. Good Job Rick!!
Congratulations to Ray Cox Jr. on his
feature win in the 70 car and a belated happy birthday (7-29).
I guess I'll remember that date from here on out as he celebrates
his birthday with Michael.

Michael gives the
Tipton Speedway a try for tonight's racing.
|
No races at Davenport due to the fair.
Michael has been putting in so much time with repairing and
working on the car that we decided he deserved more seat-time
on this Friday night. Mike, Michael, and I loaded up the car
and headed to Tipton. Strange to pull into pits that aren't
part of the norm and see drivers that you don't normally run
with and miss drivers that you do. I was glad to see Jim and
Cindy arrive in time for the heat.
Michael was in the 2nd heat starting
in the back. He accomplished moving up two spots, but in turns
1 and 2 he checked up for another driver, which led to him being
hit by the car running behind him. For the restart, Michael
moved to the back once again. This time (come to find out) it
would be to our advantage...as he was rounding turn 2 the tie
rod broke. No walls to crash, no drivers to take out, just him
careening off the track hoping the car would stop in time. It
did, and by the seat of our pants, what could have been ugly
wasn't. Michael replaced the tie rod and was ready to rock n
roll in the consi.
During the Consi Michael looked much
better and had no major breaks; we were ready for the feature.
Feature started Michael in 18th. He had
a really good run going on and eventually a few bobbles would
take place. One in particular could have left the drivers side
of the ZR71 very damaged. However, sometimes you are just blessed
with the drivers behind you. In this case, what probably should
have occurred never did, and with some quick reactions by open
wheel driver Chattman we came out okay. We were back in the
line-up and ready to race. All was looking great until the very
last few laps when the car went a little too low in the corner
and hit a tire. Michael recovered enough to pull her in the
infield ready to exit when he saw the third place driver (Jim
Willert) coming round. Rather than pull out and get in the leaders
way he chose to pull her in the infield and end tonight's race.
We did end up with a 17th out of 22 cars. We came tonight for
one reason and that was to get Michael some seat-time. A few
more laps under his belt can't hurt.

ZR71
goes to Peoria for a try at a USMTS show
|
USMTS in Peoria.
Our group (Michael, Cassie, Elmo, Gene,
Danny, Mike, Jim, Cindy, and Cassie) made a trip to Peoria tonight
hoping for the ever elusive USMTS $3,000 to win open wheel.
There were a total of 47 cars that showed up for tonight and
we were rather confident that the ZR71 might qualify. We ran
the 2nd heat starting in 5th and ending in 5th. During the wait
for the consi we were afforded time to make changes to the car
for her next run. The valve cover gasket had a leak and there
was enough time to take the valve cover off, clean her up, and
add a new gasket. We also had to replace a damaged front bumper.
Now we were ready for the race that would let us in, or send
us home. Jim did very well. He looked good from start to finish,
ran the bottom, and moved up. We ended with a 2nd place finish
and qualified for the feature. This race was definitely one
that could be termed sweet.
What seemed minutes before starting
the feature we discovered the steering box had broke and the
tires were not moving at all. With most of our down time up
we were hustling to make changes to correct the problem and
get the ZR71 out to participate in the big show. It looked grim,
and most would have said we wouldn't make it, but with the help
of Jason Hughes #12 welder we persevered. The car was on the
track and crossed the finish line. This was a race that ran
40 laps with no cautions!! We started 8th row inside and moved
with the best. The track brought memories back of our race last
September...its still a track you need to run low, or more than
likely, you will fall behind. There were times when Jim ran
the bottom and others when he ran the top. The bottom being
my choice to move forward. We ended with a 15th finish and were
all happy that we actually finished the race considering the
problems we had prior.
When the time came to load the car up
for home, we were surprised to find the steering had once again
broke. We could complain about our luck tonight at 15th, but
instead we decided we should be thankful that Jim crossed the
finish line with a car unscathed.
Good Luck to Jim at Knoxville tomorrow
night in the A1.

Happy 37th birthday Rick!!
Corn Dogs for everyone tonight as the
Jackson County Speedway was home to the fair. After two weeks
off the track Rick was back in the seat and ready to run the
2nd heat starting dead last. A few bobbles as we started the
race, but Rick managed to stay focused and ended with a 3rd
place finish out of 7 cars.
The feature started us in 12th and we
pretty much ran a caution free race. Amazing, as we had everyone
running close together throughout the 20 lap feature. There
was no moving up for many drivers, and Rick ran the race with
veterans such as Ray Cox and Bob Dominacki. We ended taking
a 13th surrounded by the big boys. A good weekend for racing
as the ZR1 and her drivers crossed the finish line with no damage
to the car.
Rick and Michael both felt good to be
back on the track and it showed. Welcome to Christine, who joined
Elmo in supporting the ZR71.

We're back!! Happy Birthday Michael who
celebrates his 19th on July 29th.
30 cars showed up for the open wheel
tonight as well as friends Sue Meyer, Kim Doyle, Liz Turner,
Judy Harding, Vickie Sedam (a Stealy Performance Machines supporter),
Diane Seng, Sharon Laermans and family. Michael had been off
the track for three weeks so I was hesitant at what would happen
with a new chassis and set-up, and whether our freshened motor
will continue on for the season. Michael did not qualify for
the heat and was required to run the consi for a place in the
feature. The consi would pull the first 8 top finishers to run
the feature with the remaining 10 going home. His good fortune
allowed him an 8th, which qualified him for a 20th place start
(the very last car) in the feature.
Feature was lengthy with several cautions,
but Michael held his own and managed to squeak by a few pile
ups. Slowly he inched his way up the field with hard driving
tonight and lots of mishaps on the track. Eventually Michael
would finish the race with a 12th place finish; John Bull taking
the checkered flag.
Thanks to the friends who showed their
support tonight and I hope enjoyed dirt track racing. If you
had them rooting for your car you can bet you didn't finish
or had difficulties moving forward. By open wheel time they
had vowed to pick other cars on the track as their favorites
so as not to jinx the ZR71. Their cars may have gone off the
track before the checkered flag waived, but Michael and the
ZR71 made it to the finish line!!

The ZR71 is getting closer to looking
like a car again and Elmo has completed painting the chassis.
Busy hands and minds continue working to have her out by Friday.
Thanks to Gary Bruington once again as
he brought the A1 to East Moline to keep Jim from sitting out
a week. M&M open wheels ran to the front taking the checkered,
2nd, and 3rd place in the feature; Jim grabbing 3rd. These were
tense moments tonight as everyone seemed to be running together
with several cautions being called. Jim started the feature
in the 3rd row and moved with the pack participating with everyone
else as we had a little rubbing, a little nudging, and bumping.
The A1 came out a little blistered, but she survived a hard
night of racing.
Special thanks again to Gary Bruington
and Mike Humphrey for helping Zemo Motorsports continue our
run every Sunday night.

Thank you Gary Bruington, owner of the
A1 open wheel. Gary was generous enough to bring his car from
Galesburg in place of the ZR71 and give Zemo Motorsports the
chance to continue on with our points for the season.
The heat was excellent as Jim made his
way to the front and captured a checkered flag in the M&M
Motorsports chassis.
Speaking of M&M, they were all major
players tonight in the feature race. Mike can only feel positive
with the cars that ended up with the checkered flag and finishing
at the top. Jim did a magnificent job of moving from a 7th place
starting position to end with a 2nd place finish. Again, thanks
to Gary Bruington for getting the number ZR71 on the track and
collecting points!! As you can see, your car and Jim performed
wonderfully.
Can't forget the late model as Jim got
to try his luck in the 78 car owned and driven by Andy Cook.
Andy is recuperating from surgery on his arm and will probably
be out all season. Therefore, Jim has been given the opportunity
to take Andy's seat time. Big boys were at East Moline tonight
and Jim showed what he had as he cruised on up to take a 3rd
place finish.

the ZR71.
Can't go a weekend without racing so
we joined Jim and the A1 and made a haul down to Burlington
for racing. Jim raced well as usual, although racing was a little
longer than usual due to an accident in the pits.
Our engine was reviewed today and there
were a few flaws with the motor. She be paying a visit to Stealy
Performance Machines on Monday for some required repairs.

Went to Davenport as spectators, but
only to have the races rained out.
Mike has started rebuilding the car with
the helps of Dave Groene, Gene Logston, Jim Sandusky, Scott
Lidtke, and Elmo. The engine is out and we've got another stub
to place on the car and are moving forward to be on the track
as soon as possible. Thanks to Shon Sanders for his offer of
assistance and Mike Humphrey for giving Mike the initial confidence
that he can make the changes himself.

Which graphic do I pick?
All describe the night
we encountered, so I'll just leave them all.

Jim had another great heat race tonight
and took the checkered flag as he gained 1st position in the
last few laps. Awesome job, Jim!!
Feature was exciting too, as we got a
phone call that Cassie had drawn another starting position for
Jim in the feature. Last week she managed to do the same thing,
so it was somewhat amazing that she did it again. Jim in the
start means we might be able to gain distance between ourselves
and the next car, since he doesn't have to battle anyone and
try to make his move up. Lucky, right? No, there is no such
as pure luck in racing. Once we came upon a caution I was able
to put the camcorder aside and see that Jim had some competition
in the number two position. Darn it anyway. Rick Wages had crept
his way up to a heck of a run and was aiming on taking over.
A few laps after the restart it looked like it could happen,
but Jim pushed forward and was having an excellent run. With
five laps to go Jim and the ZR71 made an error, or something
occurred that we just haven't figured out yet. Anyway in turn
4 the car bobbed and Jim either corrected or didn't correct
enough and they were both in the wall (full frontal) at a significant
speed. The car bounced back numerous feet and just missed taking
out Rick.
The hit was hard and we were all concerned
with Jim's safety due to the impact of the crash. Thankfully,
Jim exited the car and was assisted by the paramedics who are
a permanent fixture during race time. They looked him over,
found bruises from the harness belt, but let him return to the
pits.
The car wasn't as lucky, and her chassis
is what you could call toast. No answers at this point on whether
or not she will be running again anytime this season. We hope
so, but all depends on the almighty dollar and what other damage
has taken place we are not aware of. Mike Zemo and Jim have
been working on a way to get our car back on the track and it
appears that possibly Adam Mitchell has stepped forward to get
us out of our dilemma. Don't know for sure what is up but the
crew and friends have already offered their assistance in getting
her rebuilt. Our 'fast mutha trucka' will be requiring a little
TLC, which I'm sure she will get from Zemo Motorsports. Thanks
to Stealy Performance Machines and our sponsors for calling
to offer support. It is always appreciated.
Andy Cook also incurred injuries in his
late model tonight. My understanding is he broke his arm and
wrist; however, I haven't confirmed this with Andy. We're wishing
Andy a speedy recovery.
Congratulations to Rick Wages on his
feature win in Shon Sanders open wheel (#3). If the ZR71 couldn't
finish the race, I'm glad you were able to take the checkered
flag for the team and Randy. Hopefully, we'll see you at the
races.

Can't report too much for this evening's
racing as Michael and I were not able to attend Jackson County
Speedway due to a shortage in leg room in transportation. Tough
not to go, but the car ended up having some minor difficulties
that led her to not be able to participate in racing tonight.
Can't say what really happened except
the car was lucky to have made her problems known before any
major damage was done. She was on her way home to be repaired

We tried her on the 1/2 mile track tonight
for the first time at Davenport Speedway for the Bud Shootout!
All of us were a little intimidated that the car would be pushing
her limit and our little engine just might not survive. It was
a chance, but we took it anyway. Jim promised to keep an eye
on her and said he would do his best to take care of her. Well
he did, she left the track in one piece and flew through the
feature.
The feature had bigger motors and better
cars, but the ZR71 held her own as Jim tried moving up a few
spots. We had fast cars drop out and we kept moving up. Eventually,
Jim would take his chances, make his moves, and bring us to
a number 2 position. Even veteran drivers can make mistakes,
which is exactly what we did towards the end of the race. Jim
fell back to 5th and that is exactly where we finished the race.
Were we sad, nah....were we happy, yes The car performed and
we couldn't take an attitude of dissatisfaction. Our first 1/2
mile race and we didn't do so bad!!

Jim did it again!!
Congratulations Jim on your fifth win
of the season.
Congratulations Quad City Hitmen on your
winning season and good luck in St Louis!!
|
Another night of awesome racing by our
driver Jim Sandusky.
Even Jim's heat was an amazing feat,
with Jim starting towards the back and moving forward to the
2nd position. A great run tonight and he gave the fans a race
that was action packed.
The Quad City Hitmen (9-year old ball
players) joined us tonight on the infield for a look at the
car, pictures, and a chance to meet the driver. We hoped we
could put a good show on for these 'winning' boys and we did.
The ZR 71 and crew certainly appreciated your support and expect
you to have a winning performance in St Louis in July!
Cassie drew a one tonight, which is something
we have not done this season and I must say we took the spot
with some trepidation (I should say I did.) The ZR71 has accomplished
a lot this year and to want the win for ourselves and the QC
Hitmen just seemed like a little too much to ask for. Jim ran
the race, in the lead, throughout the entire 20-lap feature
and I feel fortunate that our 'girl' moved as Michael has referenced
in the past as a 'fast mutha trucka.' As the line-up begin the
ZR71 pulled to the side with a minor difficulty (fuel gauge,
I believe) and it was a matter of ...oh, come on, she can't
break now. No fear as the entire race was run with excellence.
Jim stayed up front, came on to lap traffic at amazing speed,
and even with a major catastrophe just inches away we eventually
took the win. My guess is that Jim surely could have been timed
in a low 14 second lap, maybe not...but he sure looked fast.
I can't leave out late model racing as
Andy Cook made his appearance once again at East Moline Speedway.
Whew, this kid put on a show and proved that if you are a natural
you can climb right back in the seat and take a checkered flag.
Andy had the likes of Jeff Walker and Rob Toland on his tail,
but the 78 kept her lead and her line and crossed the finish.
Andy offered his seat time last year as a favor to the ZR71
team and we were all ecstatic he once again proved he has the
stuff drivers are made of. Congratulations Andy, it will be
fun to race with you again.

Made it to the track with the new set-up
and by view of the hot laps and Rick's driving it was perfect.
By heat time, the set-up was not working
and it was like racing in a sandbox. Everyone was slowing down
and rolling through the corners. Even the late model boys said
the same thing, tonight there wasn't a track. Tenacity is the
name of the game and we just improved the set-up with a little
tweaking from our friend Andy Cook.
Feature time improved immensely as the
ZR71 made it from a 20th place start to a 10th place finish.
The car and the driver both worked well together and it was
like night and day from the heat race we had just experienced.
Rick got out of the car at the end of the race with much kinder
words than he had in the heat.
Late Model racing was as good as always.
Competition is awesome in this division. Bob Dominacki took
the seat in late model tonight after winning the open wheel
feature. Geez, this guy takes risks on the top!! It may work
for him, but it's not something I see most driver's do with
such finesse.

Kudos to Mike Humphrey of M&M Motorsports
for his support with the ZR71!! Whenever we are in our last
minute mode for parts, Mike is always there to help our team.
Kudos to Mike Zemo, car owner, who was able to give the ZR71
the little extra kick for Davenport. It showed, as Michael appeared
to be "smokin" in his heat race, leading the first
7 laps with the likes of Ronnie Weedon and Bob Dominacki. Jessica
was even amazed at the look of her brother on the track as he
ran with the big boys. Like any kid, the pressure of the big
boys and wanting his 2nd heat win led him to bobble and err
in turns 3 and 4. He ended up losing his front position and
fell behind 4th which placed him in the consi. Ronnie Weedon
took the win.
Michael's consi showed him better in
holding his line and entering and exiting with more fortitude.
The consi was ugly with one caution or another and most guys
spinning out in turns 3 and 4. Michael seemed to be in the midst
of each and everyone, but he came through them with only a crushed
quarter panel. Towards the end of the race, Michael lost power
steering and could not control the car, unfortunately... meaning
he must leave the track. Well and good, as by the time he hit
the pits the car was dangerously overheating. Turns out the
balancer on the front of the crank busted, which led to all
pulleys NOT functioning. Michael and Dad loaded up the car,
washed her, and worked to get her ready for Saturday night racing.

The ZR71 goes back to Blue Grass
for a chance at the Governor's Cup with Jim Sandusky in the
seat.
16 cars showed up for the Governor's
Cup with one lane and no passing. Jim started the feature race
in 11th and moved to a 5th place finish. In the interim Jim
was forced to move to the back of the pack when there was a
spin out in front of him. No damage, but it placed him back
in 14th, where he had to make his way back up to his 5th place
position. The race was tough as usual, as only 6 cars finished.
Congratulations to John Bull on the feature win

Jim took his 4th feature win tonight
at East Moline Speedway
|
We netted a fourth feature win for the
season and Jim is keeping his lead in points standing at East
Moline Speedway.
Jim's heat ran better than usual and
he ended with a 2nd place finish. As for the feature, Cassie
drew a 4th place spot and luckily most of the big boys were
placed behind him, so I thought if the car doesn't break he
could end up with a chance at the checkered flag. Big boys...I
didn't have a chance to watch because Jim had a race on his
hands. Marty Thompson started up front and he showed he wasn't
about to place second. Fans couldn't possibly complain about
the competition that took place between Marty and Jim. Both
kept their lines, raced hard, and wanted the lead position.
Marty ran the lead for most of the race, but Jim began running
nose to nose with him for approximately 5 laps, eventually gaining
the win position.
Thanks to Jon Estes and his family for
all the support they showed tonight. I wish they could attend
all of our races.
Recognition goes to Jason Pershy in his
second year in the cruiser division. Jason pulled off another
win and shows a ton of potential. Rick Wages...you may not have
taken the win tonight, but your car looked great at both the
Jackson County Speedway and East Moline. (Just remember the
mom in me when you are running the 3 car on Friday's, you make
me want to freak when you run next to Michael (-: )

Rick started up front during the first
heat race and ran good. Eventually he would run 5th in the heat
which placed him farther back in the feature; something Rick
hasn't had to do for quite some time. Mike decided that he would
work with the car and change the set-up since we weren't running
as we had in the past few weeks. Changes were made and we were
ready for the feature.
The feature started Rick in a 13th place
position and he ran some excellent laps. Lots of three wide
tonight which puts the fans on the edge of their seats and racing
where no one was giving up their positions and battling for
a move up. Front runners did a great job too, with Kelly Meyers
taking the win. Haven't met Kelly yet, but you can always expect
him to be at the front when the race finishes. Rick ended with
a 17th place finish.

Whoa...stop the race. Tonight's heat
race was not pretty for Michael.
The track was a slick, so slick it was like nothing Michael
had run on. The way the car was handling I would have bet my
bottom dollar that the car had not been brought back to her
correct set-up. However, I was informed that was not the case.
Michael was unfamiliar with this type of race and it showed.
So that left us running in the Consi.
The consi race was much better and Michael
landed a 4th which gave him a place in the feature. Still not
exiting the corner great, but he managed to keep up. The feature
left him towards the back, but with 30 cars running for a position
in the 20 car feature he was lucky to have made the show. He
was still running rough with the exits, but by the end of the
race Michael had the car under control and seemed to know when
to give her gas and when to let up so he could get around the
track. I was glad when the race was over.
By Sunday, Mike informed me that the
set-up might not quite be the one required for Davenport. Michael
still requires seat time on slick to master it, but as least
it was confirmed that the car wasn't at her best either.

Zemo Motorsports scored a second
place feature tonight and we feel Jim made a huge effort to
get us there. Cassie drew a sixth place start, which is not
a front position, but nothing to cry about. As usual Jim moved
forward and it felt like he could grab hold of the first place
position. However, nothing is for sure and Jim did an unusual
thing... he spun out. Of course, as you realign for the restart,
when the guy taps his butt, you know you are headed to the back.
We all have to expect errors so it wasn't a devastating part
of the evening. You can't win them all and the harder you work
the better the victory...and it wasn't going to be tonight.
I can live with that. But, it didn't take me long to change
my mind because Jim was moving from the last place position
to the front row. Okay, my mindset has just changed again and
the adrenaline kicks in. There is something about being the
underdog and conquering the hits you get. Jim was proving that
perseverance is all it takes and I was ready to go back up front.
He ran an excellent race and made it to the second position
when the checkered flag waved. I was impressed with Jim's ability
to move forward with a damaged car, and we are all happy with
the outcome.
Ironically, the exact thing happened
2 weeks ago when Jim took the win in the J&J topless race.
Doug Crampton was the underdog who spun out and was placed in
the back. Doug , incredibly, did the same thing and moved towards
the front, giving Jim a run for his money. This week the roles
were reversed and Doug took home the trophy and the $600 purse.
Congratulation Doug!!
Cassie Reinhart also made her first appearance
in the cruisers tonight, compliments of Jim Sandusky. As a graduation
gift she was informed she would have a ride in that division.
Her opportunity came in part to J&J Camper sales and their
171 cruiser. Cassie was a contender in hot laps, heat, and feature
and brought home a $20 win for her night in the 171. Way to
go Cassie!!

Rick is doing excellent this year. He
is already 5th in points standing at the Jackson County Speedway,
and I've gotta say it one more time, Michael and Rick are still
in their rookie season of racing which puts them both at a disadvantage.
The track was slick tonight, again as
though driving on ice. Rick's heat started with him in a front
position and he was running excellent the first few laps. It
is difficult, and we saw a number of cars go off the track,
sliding right over the cushion. Rick did not spin-out, slide-out,
or screw up. He gave every effort to remain up front and he
ended his heat with a 4th place.
It was a good night to have only 17 cars,
because as I described the track was slick. The feature race
started with Rick again in the front. He kept his position until
there was a caution (sometimes you pray for them and other times
it just ticks you off.) With many good drivers around him on
the restart and the condition of the track, he did fall behind.
He was in the midst of a wreck that he just managed to slide
by, and everyone was concerned for the driver involved. In the
end, no one was hurt, and Rick ended the night with an eighth
place finish. As Mike said, these guys are new and their learning
curve is starting up front and seeing how long they can keep
up. We expect them to fall back, and just want the guys and
the car to return to our pits safely each night.
Congratulation to Bob Dominacki on his
first feature win of the year.

Congratulations Little Z on your first
checkered flag!!
Michael hit his goal of a heat win.
|
Tonight we had some new supporters, so
I can't say for sure who our lucky charm was, but it brought
Michael his first victory win in his heat race!!
Michael started the heat in the second
row and with the first lap in there was a caution for a new
restart. With the restart he managed to make it to the front
position and the race began. He is still in his rookie season
in my mind and my thoughts were please Michael just focus and
don't spin out. You also think, okay the race has got to be
almost over...when I looked at the scoreboard (I love this feature
at Davenport) only to discover he was only in his fourth lap.
Egads, there is too much time left for the others to come up
and pass. But, the kid did excellent and held his spot for the
entire length of the heat. He even managed to put quite a bit
of distance between himself and the second place finisher! Our
first heat win with the Little Z and the entire crew was ecstatic,
let alone Michael Zemo. As he grabbed the flag for his first
checkered I was told he was grinning from ear to ear. As he
exited the track I heard he was grinning from hear to ear. And,
as he entered the pits he was grinning from ear to ear, giving
the knuckle rub to his team mates and his manly grunt. In his
glory of a win, the poor boy almost went directly into the pits
to celebrate his victory. Thank goodness Elmo was there to remind
him that the winner does have to weigh in. A mistake I'm sure
he will never make again, but a sign of what it is like to capture
your first win. It was a night of his family still trembling
5 minutes later, but this time the trembling was a good thing
for our son and nephew.
With a heat win, you go out in the feature
and you think I just might be able to do this. Your confidence
is good, your focus is great, and then with one little mishap
and you are put to the back and your entire "zone"
has just left you. Michael was spun out by none other than the
notorious Bob "the Dominator" Dominacki and from that
moment on he was a goner. He was angry at himself and he wanted
the taste of the front of the pack and it just wasn't going
to happen tonight. His feature left him with disappointment
of himself, but he came out safe and still running. I think
the heat win was a perfect blessing on a night of a full moon.
Racing is racing, Bob made it clear his
was not an intentional jab. The full moon affected him differently
and he said he felt like ' I hit every car on the track, but
the pace car.' Bob's night may not have been good at Davenport,
but come Saturday he ran away with a heat and a feature win
at the Jackson County Speedway, his first feature win this year.
One day can be crappy and the next day a joy.
