Milo Veloz Jr., won the A-Modified in
dramatic fashion. Veloz took the lead with a daring 4-wide pass,
after a late race caution. Ray Cox Jr., finished second after
leading a majority of the race. Bob Dominacki finished third,
with Jeff Morris fourth, and Marty Diercks fifth.
Race was excellent and the four wide
in turn 3 was amazing. Michael didn't qualify in his heat race
since he started in the back after drawing a 60; draw/re-draw
is sometimes a hindrance. We did have a good starting spot in
the consi with a 2nd row outside. Michael would edge up to the
crumbly in turns one and two and bobbled when he should be exiting
with the car running straight. He probably fell back to ninth
or tenth and made a great catch-up, but it wasn't good enough
with a 5th place finish. This was a night where it was nobody's
fault but his own and he clearly took the blame for not making
the show. A hard way to end our hopes of running the feature,
but he was the first to admit it was his fault alone. A difficult
year for the guys since February, so I'm glad our season is
over and finished.
Milo was a force to be reckoned with
as he moved from 10th to a first place finish. Ray Cox looked
good throughout, and hard charger, Bob Dominacki, moved from
the back to take third. Brandon Durbin had a great run, but
would fall out with a broken power steering belt. Congratulations
to all of the front runners.

ALEDO RACEWAY PARK FRONT PAGE NEWS -
October 2, 2006 Miller and Zrostlik Victorious at First Annual
Aledo Fall Nationals by KYLE EALY ALEDO, Ill. (Sept 30) — Bart
Miller of Clarence, Iowa, passed Ray Cox on lap five and then
survived several cautions to win the Aledo Fall Nationals modified
championship at Aledo Raceway Park. The win paid Miller $2,000
for the victory. Long Grove, Iowa’s, Joe Zrostlik battled late
charging Dustin Kay to claim the $400-to-win four-cylinder feature
event. Ninety-three race cars enjoyed a beautiful day and perfect
track conditions on the high-banked 1/4-mile. The 49 modifieds
that entered to do battle were shaved down to a 22-car main
event after six heats and three B mains. The front six cars
in the 50-lap feature were offered a $750 bonus to go to the
rear and try and win it from there. All six drivers turned the
offer down, so the two drivers starting in the rear of the field,
Bob Dominacki and Mike Zemo Jr., were told they could win the
bonus if victorious. Jason Pershy and Doug Crampton brought
the field to the green with Pershy in the lead. On lap three,
Ray Cox would take over the lead and then the yellow came out
slowing the action down. On the restart, Miller, who had started
ninth, blew past Cox to take the point. Another caution would
come out on lap 16 with Miller still leading, 13th starting
Troy Emrick in second, and eighth starting Jim Willert in third.
Yet another caution came out on lap 22 when Mike Massey spun
in turn four. The front three were still the same on the restart
but now late model veteran Rob Toland, had moved into fourth
and Bob Dominacki had edged up into a ninth position from the
tail-end. With Miller and Emrick still out ahead of the group,
Toland and Willert raced for several laps until Toland secured
third spot for good on lap 36. In the end, though, Miller had
too much under the hood, did extremely well in lapped traffic,
and cruised to the win. Emrick hung on for second, Rob Toland
finished third, Jim Willert fourth and Josh Foster rounded out
the top five. Good show Aledo Raceway Park.
Feature — 1. Bart Miller; 2. Troy Emerick;
3. Rob Toland; 4. Jim Willert; 5. Josh Foster; 6. Marty Thompson;
7. Bob Dominacki; 8. Jim Sandusky; 9. Doug Crampton; 10. John
Bull; 11. Rick Hixson; 12. Bruce Hanford; 13. Mark Massey; 14.
Jeff Morris; 15. Brian Culbertson; 16. Thad Wilson; 17. Sam
Davis; 18. Kevin Williams; 19. Ray Cox; 20. Mike Zemo; 21. Jason
Pershy; 22. Bill Roberts.
Michael would be lucky to make the show
since he was out of the heat race by one spot and would do the
same in the consi. Our lucky night as we were drawn as a provisional
from the drivers that didn't make the show. I would like to
have seen Michael or Dominacki take the win since they would
have been the chosen two to win a $2,750 purse, but it wasn't
so. The track was better than I expected and although Michael
didn't finish the race we had fun. Next race is the Spooktacular.

I dislike last minute decisions to go
off our regular schedule and I get a sense of dread thinking
something bad might happen. Fortunately for me, heading off
to Blue Grass didn't have a terrible ending. It was good to
see Jerry Durbin healthy and ready to get back to racing next
season (with his doctor's approval). Brandon Durbin started
first row in the feature and had a good shot at the win but
would later be put to the back and would hit the wall leaving
the race for the night. I'm not sure what happened but from
the response of the crowd it wasn't pretty and I think people
were relieved he got out of the car without injury. I got to
see Leland Bushong race for the first time since he has never
raced against us except when Jim drove the car. He ended with
4th, and Michael got to relive old memories from his first season
in 2002 and placed 5th. No injuries, no damage, and turns 3
and 4 seem to be the same (first night in hot laps will always
be a memory). The show ran quicker than years ago so that was
a plus, with Donovan Lodge taking the win. Toland and Veloz
would follow. Intentions are to still sell the car to Russ so
I want to keep her in one piece until we say goodbye.
Payout wasn't what we were told, so Papa
Mike was a little grumpy. I guess they were suppose to be paying
out what Kevin Feller pays on Sundays. Speaking of Kevin, I
certainly hope he continues to be the promoter for QCS, he has
done alot over these past few years and packed the stands. Good
luck Kevin and Carey and we'll see you in November!!

We made the trip to Peoria along with
QC teams Veloz and Sandusky/Schultz. Jim, of course, would qualify
in the top six in time trials, Milo would qualify in his heat,
and Michael would have to prove himself in the consi. The boy
looked good in the consi although we would have to suffer through
caution after caution. Each time the followers would eat his
dust as he showed our terminator can still run. On the last
lap during his front stretch ride he would break the gear and
qualify with the checkered flag. Alex suffered her first bout
of nerves and stress and showed signs of the mom syndrome (hee
hee). Repairs were hurried and we have to thank Milo and team
for their support, tires, and replacement gear. Danny (thank
you for all your hard hours) and Russ were also on the spot
to get us back on the track. Alex, Katelyn, and Austin made
our night complete.
Jim would start the 100 lap feature in
4th, Milo in 10th, and Little Z in 15th. They all showed their
stuff, but Milo would fall out of the race with a broken spindle
as he held 5th position and was moving up, Jim would continue
on but suffer body and tire damage, and Michael would hang on
as long as he could after suffering a flat tire. It was replaced
with the only tire we had that gave him 4 inches of reverse
stagger. Not a good thing, but he hung on and finished with
12th.
Peoria is a dust bowl that leaves you
looking like a raccoon with the taste of dirt, but we all had
fun. My nights always end right when Michael hop's out of the
car with his Michael Jordan smile and tells me 'that was fun'.
Anytime I see a genuine smile, it automatically makes me smile
back and feel happy. This year has been our worst for performance,
but Michael still enjoys hopping in the Z71 and running on the
oval with the competition....and he doesn't nag, complain, or
hold a grudge. Good job tonight Mikey Z!! Milo's motor builder
would take the win. Congratulations to Brent Mullins.

The V-8 Modified feature saw a lot of
new faces competing on the quarter-mile oval. Jeff Morris captured
his first win of 2006 at Davenport. Mark Schulte finished second
in a rare Davenport appearance. Late model driver Jim Sandusky
dropped down to the modified ranks and took home third. Dean
McGee and John Bull were fourth and fifth respectively.
Like most of the year it was like running
in shark infested waters for tonights heat and consi. We didn't
make the show, but it wasn't because of the car not being on
her mark. Michael had excellent runs but lady luck was not on
his side as he would be collected in others mishaps. He was
moving forward and would have made the show in my humble opinion
but life doesn't make any promises. The guys were totally deflated
but I was of the opinion Michael being in the wrong place at
the wrong time. He didn't have anything to be ashamed of so
I was cool with the outcome and enjoyed the feature race. Excellent
show and you just weren't sure who would take the win. Great
runs by a lot of guys and the whole crew enjoyed the A Mod feature.
Lots of my favorites picks did well and ended up with good finishes.
Saturday, if all works out, we'll be
heading to Peoria for a 100 lapper. I hope we see a few QC drivers
there because we always have to root for the hometown boys.
I cross my fingers we all make the show and end the evening
without problems.

A Modified first heat winner, Thad Wilson
took the lead from Kevin Peters on lap six of the feature and
never looked back again until he got to the checkers for the
win. On a last lap charge Brendan Durbin moved into take second
with Peters holding on for third. Shaune Lewis was fourth with
Jim Willert fifth. Jeff Morris took the other heat.
Michael started in the back for his heat
race so he wasn't able to qualify for the re-draw feature race.
However, it didn't make the race any less intense. I thought
the Z71 proved to be excellent tonight as she moved form 12th
to 10, 9th, 5th, and then 4th before Michael would get caught
up in turn two, three wide. We would spin out and be hit on
the driver's side leaving him without a working clutch and flat
tire. With nine laps to go, Michael would have the tire replaced
and be back on the track starting in the back. Michael made
a valiant effort to move forward and did end with a 7th place
finish. Good job, son. Racing is racing and you never know what
will occur in those 20 laps. I have respect for the drivers
in our class so 'life happens' to everyone and we just look
forward to the next race. The car is back and I'm proud of the
show Michael put on tonight.
Congratulation to Late Model winner,
Hershel Roberts. He had his game on and everyone appreciated
the outcome of this feature race!

V-8 Modified feature saw point leader
and pole sitter Jerry Connors rocket away from the field. Late
in the race, Connors would get bogged down by lapped traffic,
allowing Thad Wilson to power by and take the lead. Wilson would
go on to take his first win at Davenport this season. Connors
would hold on for second with Bob Dominacki a close third. Donovan
Lodge took fourth with Mike Zemo Jr. fifth. Lodge, Wilson, and
Marty Diercks won Modified heat races. Connors' second place
finish was more than enough to claim the Modified track championship.
We're almost at the end of the racing
season and the car is finally closer to being dialed up. Michael
did a great job moving forward and I was happy with his finish.
It appears the final points are:
1 45 Jerry Connors*** 536 Pleasant Valley, IA
2 75 Thad Wilson* 492 Moline,
IL
3 27 John Bull* 489 Davenport, IA
4 65 Chuck Hanna* 450 Port Byron, IL
5 43 Milo Veloz Jr.** 448 Colona, IL
6 5d Bob Dominacki 444 Bettendorf, IA
7 70 Ray Cox Jr 441 Maquoketa, IA
8 53 Matt Stein 428 Davenport, IA
9 z71 Mike Zemo Jr 419 Geneseo, IL
10 40 Doug Crampton** 411 Milan, IL
I'm surprised we made it in the top ten
so we're ending the season on a positive note. The
guys will be focusing on a few special races in the next month
and a better plan for next year. Since we spun a bearing in
Georgia its not been good for our old girl and it seems it will
be the Terminator chassis that will get the boot. The guys will
probably be salivating at the thought of a new chassis, but
I'll feel sad....there is nothing wrong with being old and different.
I hope her new owner will prove she still has it, now that would
make me happy.
Congratulations to Thad on another win
and you have to give credit to Rob Toland in the Late Model.
He started in the back and finished third. Great racing tonight.

Welcome back Shane Davis and happy birthday
Mike Sr.!
Pole sitter, Bob Stogdell led the first
lap of the IITI-Reynolds Ford A Modified feature with second
heat winner, Jordan Schram taking over on lap two. On lap three
Milo Veloz Jr charged out front with Donovan Lodge, Thad Wilson
and Doug Crampton in hot pursuit. An eighteenth lap caution
for a car against the wall in turn four saw Veloz coast to a
stop on the front chute with engine problems. With two laps
to go the restart was double file with Wilson and Lodge on the
front row. First heat winner, Wilson led the final two laps
for his first win of the ever shortening season. Lodge was second
with Crampton third. Shaune Lewis took fourth over Brandon Durbin.
Jim Willert won the other heat.
Congratulation to Thad Wilson and happy
birthday to Hunter. Again, another mediocre night for Michael,
but we always find reasons to be thankful with a 11th place
finish. Sorry to hear Milo blew his engine in the last few laps
and hope he can make it back on the track come Friday.
Good job Andy Cook on a feature win at
Jackson County Saturday night!!

The IITI-Reynolds Ford A Modified feature
was a little better as it had a total of six cautions before
it was over. First heat winner, Shaune Lewis led the first lap
with Donovan Lodge taking over on lap two. After a mid-race
caution Jim Willert and Jeff Morris joined the top two to make
it a four car battle. Lodge held on to take his second win this
year as the race ended on the white flag lap due to a caution
involving Brandon Durbin and second heat winner, Jason Pershy.
Willert took second with Morris moving in on the last lap to
take third. Lewis held on for fourth with Doug Crampton fifth.
We weren't on our game tonight, but better
than most of the features so far this year as Michael finished
with 7th. A few more nights to try and open up the can of Whoop
Ass instead of Crazy. Congratulations to Donovan Lodge on his
feature win.
Late Model race was intense and it seemed
Mike Murphy would take the checkered flag win. Instead, he would
suffer a flat tire with two laps to go and Rick Wages would
take the win in the final lap. Congratulations Rick, and Mike,
I feel your pain.

The V-8 Modified feature was a rough
and tumble affair. Mike Zemo Jr. led lap one, with Davenport's
most recent winner Marty Diercks taking the lead on lap two.
Once again, a caution flag would take down the race leader,
as Diercks suffered a flat tire during a lap 16 yellow. Doug
Crampton took the lead on the restart and drove to his second
Davenport win of the season. Donovan Lodge came from deep in
the field to finish second over Zemo, Bob Dominacki, and Tony
VonDresky. Modified heat race wins went to Crampton, Diercks,
and Keith Blum.
The Z71 looked pretty good on the track
with Michael finishing 3rd in the feature. During heat races
the track was unforgiving to many drivers as they hit the cushion
in turn 1 and ran right off the track. If I could have I would
have clued Michael to the fact he wanted to stay away from the
top; but of course he would have to experience the ride around
turns one and two to get the picture. He held on to the cushion
and landed in last place. Our girl proved she could still move
forward and Michael managed to move up from 7th to a 3rd place
finish. Congratulation to Doug on his feature win.

IITI-Reynold's Ford A Modified pole sitter
Shaune Lewis took the early lead of the feature, but a second
lap restart cost him the point. On the restart Donovan Lodge
charged to the front pulling third heat winner, Thad Wilson
with him. These two put on a battle running side by side for
the next eleven laps. Wilson took over the lead on lap thirteen
when the caution flew for Lodge as his car developed problems.
But that was the only lap Wilson led as he brought out the caution
on the restart. A double file restart saw Jeff Morris and second
heat winner, Doug Crampton on the front row. Morris took the
lead and went on for his sixth win of the season. Crampton held
on for second with Mike Zemo Jr third. After being involved
in the second lap restart Jim Willert came back through the
pack to take fourth with first heat winner, Troy Emerick fifth.
Our nights are beginning to look better
but I'm skittish about saying anything positive in case I jinx
myself. I'm just glad to see a smile on Michael's face and seeing
the car move forward instead of backwards. Racing was good and
I can't take anything away from Jeff or Doug, they have been
excellent on the track all year long.
Late Model race was very exciting and
the crowd reminded me of Ronnie Weedon's 500 and above races.
Everyone wanted to see Hershel win.and he had the fans up off
their seats. Disappointment was obvious, but Eric Gustaf took
the win fair and square. Hershel will win before the season
closes and it will be an awesome night for the fans, including
the Zemo's. Maybe his moment will be when Shane is back to celebrate
with the rest of us.

Sometimes
your only chance of winning is a little luck, and it looked like
that just might happen tonight as Michael pulled from the second
row of the feature to take the lead. Excellent run as he had the
distance between him and the second and third place runners battling
for position. Even little bobbles didn't put him in the hot seat...that
would come later after a caution was called. Hmmm....Jeff Morris,
Milo Veloz, Doug Crampton on his tail... I'm optimistic, but I'm
realistic. Good show for my boy and seeing him up front was an
added bonus. I can't complain about the outcome, it was a clean
race and ever so good. Congratulations to Milo Veloz on his first
feature win at QCS in 2006; Jeff Morris, Doug Crampton and Michael
followed. |

Happy Birthday Michael and Ray Cox Jr.
Zemo's celebrated Michael's birthday and did not race tonight.
Thoughts and prayers to the Davis family.
Looking forward to Shane back at the track reminiscing about

and kind words.

Michael
had to run the heat and consi to qualify for the feature. He arrived
late for the heat and was moved from second row outside to the
back of the pack. The consi would be a better run for Michael
as he held the lead until Donovan Lodge moved forward in the last
few laps and nabbed the win. Feature race lineup would have the
same fate for some A-Mod drivers as they arrived late to the track
so Michael moved from a 14th to an 11th starting position. Even
moving a few spots forward wouldn't give us an edge and we finished
the race in 13th. Mary Diercks, Troy Emerick, and Bob Dominacki
would take the top 3, respectively. |

Kenny Schrader at QCS...when Kevin told
me the news early this year (February?) I envisioned a repeat
from last year's fair night with the added bonus of running
with Schrader. Of course, this year is considered worse than
our first year of racing, so I changed my goal to just getting
the car on the track and that was probably a fantasy. Tonight's
racing would be the first time the car looked to be 75% of what
she was by the end of the year in 2005. For the love of God,
we were blessed and Michael took advantage of the car letting
him be in control. We placed 3rd in the heat, second in the
consi, giving Michael a starting position of 18th. He would
make his way up to 12th and I was ecstatic he did that well
with an initial field of forty-three entries. Schrader would
start in the back with Michael and can you believe I was afraid
Michael might accidentally run into Kenny? Instead Michael would
get his own little bump from Schrader and we all joked we should
have him sign the back quarter panel. Good racing, cool weather,
and fun for all. Kevin and Carey, you put on a great fair night!
Thank you sponsor, Banks Plastering & Drywall, for the added
bonus to get us on the track.
With forty-three Modifieds and twenty-eight
Street Stocks on hand Tuesday for the Rock Island County Fair
races the pits were crowded and the stands were just as crowded.
Milo Veloz Jr drew the lucky number one for the feature start
and went immediately to the lead with Richie Smith, Jim Sandusky
and Kevin Blum hot on his tail. Ken Schrader was on hand and
started in twentieth spot, against some of the best Modifieds
in the area. At lap three Sandusky had to retire his car with
Blum following him at lap six. This brought Ray Cox Jr and Marty
Thompson up with Smith to keep the pressure on Veloz. Thompson
was soon up beside Veloz challenging for the lead. At lap fourteen
Thompson inched out in front, but Veloz wasn't ready to give
up yet. As the two ran side by side Veloz led lap nineteen with
Thompson coming back on lap twenty. Veloz inched back out front
on lap twenty-one, but once again Thompson came back on lap
twenty-two. Thompson led the final three laps to take the thousand
to win checkers. Doug Crampton moved in to take second with
Veloz holding on for third after a bobble in turn two in the
last two laps. Ray Guss Jr came from twelfth to take fourth
with Richie Smith holding on for fifth.

Front row starter, Donovan Lodge led
the first lap of the IITI-Reynold's Ford Open Wheel Modified
feature after two cautions flew before a lap was scored. On
lap two eighth place starter, and first heat winner, Jeff Morris
took over the lead and then two more cautions flew. Morris led
the field off on the restart and things seemed to settle down
until the mid-race point. At lap ten fourth place runner, Daron
Oberbroeckling brought out another caution The seventh caution
came before another lap could be scored involving early leader,
Lodge and second place runner Shaune Lewis. One lap later the
last caution flew with Morris still in control. On the restart
Morris had Milo Veloz Jr and third heat winner, Jim Willert
right on his tail. With four laps to go Willert moved into second
and held on to take the spot behind Morris until the checkers
flew. It was Morris' fifth feature win at Quad City Speedway
this season. Willert was second with Veloz third and Brandon
Durbin fourth. Oberbroeckling was fifth. Ray Cox Jr won the
other heat.
Michael completed the feature with a
9th place finish. As a compliment to maybe one of your favorite
drivers, I'd like to recognize John
Bull. Taping
the feature, I could see there was a driver on Michael's tail,
especially through turns 3 & 4. Michael was slower in that
corner and the other driver's bumper was right on his rear.
As I taped I thought Michael might get spun out so I zoomed
in to see who was so close and what I might have to fear...it
was John...and I was so comfortable with John's abilities I
panned back out and finished taping. As confirmation, Michael
told me that John is the cleanest driver he has raced. It doesn't
take much to make me edgy, so this is a true compliment to John;
there was no edge. There are many amazing drivers that are just
as clean, but I just felt like mentioning what thoughts occurred
to me tonight.

Kevin Williams led the V-8 Modified feature
through the first two cautions, but on lap seven, Jerry Connors
burst into the lead. Connors would go on to lead the rest of
the way for his second straight win and third of the season.
Milo Veloz Jr. started alongside Connors and would finish a
strong second. Bob Dominacki, who brought out the race's first
caution, rim-rode to a third place finish. Doug Crampton and
John Bull rounded out the top five. Williams, Marty Diercks,
and Chris Giegle took Modified heat race wins, with Chuck Hanna
taking the semi-feature.
Michael just made the feature by placing
8th in the consi. The feature would give Michael an 11th place
finish.

Another pole started, Thad Wilson took
the early lead of the IITI-Reynold's Ford Open Wheel Modified
feature, but the caution flew on lap two. On the restart tenth
place starter, Jeff Morris moved into second and then took over
the lead one lap later. Morris had things pretty well under
control when the only other caution came out at lap seventeen
for debris. On the restart, in a three car wide battle for the
lead Jim Willert came out in front. Willert led the final four
laps to take his second win of the season. Daron Oberbroeckling
was second with Doug Crampton third, Morris fourth and Wilson
fifth. Crampton and Brandon Durbin were the heat winners
First for Michael in his heat race and
if you thought he looked a little squirrely you may be surprised
to know the steering wheel came off. Good grief, I just wanted
him off the track before he ran directly into the concrete wall.
Michael finished 9th in the feature. It
was a strange night for many.

John Irwin started on the pole of the
non-stop, caution free V8 Modified feature and took the early
lead. At lap seven second heat winner, Ray Cox Jr went by and
stayed out front until the checkered flag fell giving him his
second victory in a row. For the entire race there was a heck
of a battle going on behind Ray between four cars for second
place. Tony VonDresky took the spot with Bob Dominacki third,
Timmy Current fourth and first heat winner, Andy Cook fifth.
Congratulations Ray
Test and Tune for the Z71 since she didn't
hit the track on Friday. Andy gave us some new ideas for more
bite and Michael gave the car a spin. He was happy with the
change but has some adjusting to do to get use to how differently
the car moves. I'm ready for a normal night of racing; the car
is in a different mode each time Michael hops in the car. Michael
finished 13th. Chris, next time we are at JCS I am going to
make it a point to meet you.

The V-8 Modified feature looked as if
it were going to be a green, white, checkered affair until a
lap 19 caution, then another, and another, and ... When the
checkers finally did fly, it was Jerry Connors taking the accolades.
Ray Cox Jr. had taken the lead on lap three and held the top
spot until the final restart when Connors launched his car into
the lead. Cox held on to finish second with John Bull taking
third. Bob Dominacki and Thad Wilson rounded out the top five.
Modified heat race wins went to Connors, Dominacki, and Brandon
Durbin, with Chuck Hanna taking the semi-feature,
Mike began to change the oil about the
time heat races were to begin (a last minute decision) and found
metal shavings on the magnetic oil plug and in the oil filter.
This is the second time we left the races without staying until
the finish; once in Georgia and tonight.
I could go into great detail of our discoveries,
but I'll just say I think we conquered the problem, or so I
hope. The Zemo's had an angel on their shoulder tonight and
we'll find out on our next race night if we can make it through
the heat and feature. A thank you to Davenport Speedway for
being so considerate.

Richie Smith charged from his fourth
place starting spot to take the early lead of the IITI-Reynold's
Ford Open Wheel Modified feature, with Milo Veloz Jr taking
over in this caution free race on lap six. By lap eight tenth
place starter and second heat winner, Jeff Morris had moved
into second and was soon trying Veloz on both the bottom and
the top side. At the mid-race point Morris finally moved out
front by himself and stayed there to take his fourth Quad City
Speedway win of the season to match his son's record at the
track. Ray Cox Jr moved in to take second with Veloz holding
on for third. Doug Crampton took fourth with Smith holding on
for fifth. Jim Willert won the other heat.
Extremely hot night to get suited up
and race, but these guys do it. Michael started up front for
the feature race but fell back, came forward, and fell back.
We'll take his 8th place finish. The car did look better on
the track, so if we can keep her with only minor changes, maybe
Michael can finally get on top of his game. I always enjoy rooting
for the underdog and the 97 D&M chassis has seen her days,
but I want her to prove she still rocks.

Kevin Peters of Monmouth, another veteran
racer ended a Davenport dry spell. Peters captured the V-8 Modified
feature after starting on the outside pole position. Peters
took the lead of the feature on lap three from pole sitter Donovan
Lodge. Peters most serious challenge came from Milo Veloz Jr
on lap 17, when Veloz tried to drive under Kevin in turn three.
The two cars made heavy contact, with Peters maintaining the
lead and Veloz falling back to third. At the stripe, it was
Peters with the win, Lodge second, and Veloz third. Andy Cook
and Rick Ratliff rounded out the top five. Modified heat race
wins went to Peters,
Bad day for Kevin... I don't think so.
Congratulations on your win; I guess 70 hours this week doesn't
hurt so bad now. Michael placed 14th, although it is not from
trying to work out the kinks in the Z71. Perseverance is the
key as they keep on trying to bring the old girl back to life.

Happy 47th Birthday to the young pup,
Shane Davis!
Another very exciting race was the IITI-Reynolds
Ford Open Wheel Modified feature as Jeff Morris accepted the
Front Row Challenge and went to the rear. Jim Willert chose
to stay up front and took the early lead. Only two cautions
fell during this race and they were both before lap two. On
the last restart Morris had moved from eighteenth to thirteenth.
At lap five Milo Veloz Jr edged out front with Willert and Ray
Cox Jr in a tight battle for second. At Lap seventeen Willert
got back by Veloz with Morris moving into the fourth spot. On
lap twenty-one Morris moved up to second, but had to settle
for that spot as he could not quite get to Willert. Willert
took his first win of the season with Morris Second, Cox third,
Veloz fourth and fourteenth place starter, Timmy Current rounding
out the top five. Richie Smith, Current and Steve Gustaf Jr
won the heats.
Excellent racing with Jeff taking the
back and moving so close to a feature win. Congratulations to
Jim Willert.....and Kevin Feller; looks like Carey will have
to keep her promise and get him his dog. Michael broke a spindle
early in the race and placed 18th. Can we shake this bad luck
and open up a can of Whoop Ass this season? Fortunately, Kevin
and Carey always have special perks for the 'hard luck' award
and we seem to be getting plenty of them.

It was zero to hero for Chuck Hanna in
V-8 Modified feature. After severely damaging his car last week,
Hanna came back with a vengeance and captured his first Davenport
win of the season. Hanna took the lead from Tony Von Dresky
on lap eight and held on to win the feature. Thad Wilson battled
his way through heavy traffic to take second ahead of Andy Cook,
John Bull, and Matt Stein. Modified heat race wins went to Hanna,
Stein, and Rick Ratliff, while Daron Oberbroeckling won the
semi-feature.
Cautions throughout the mid-season A-Mod
with racing ending on lap 15. Consi looked good as Michael moved
from 14th to 4th. Feature we would move forward only to be spun
out and move to the back. Michael ended with a 12th.
In the final lap late model Doug Nigh
would capture another win. Chuck Hanna, thumbs up to you on
your first 2006 win.
Paige...Gram's had a great time with
you at Adventureland!!! I loved the Space Shot as I'm sure you
know ( I even made you laugh :-)...and I don't know if we will
ever get on the Splash Over again...I have bruises, do you?
Next we will get Mom and Michael to go to Great America and
show them my fearless girl. You are the best. I'll remember
the Hills Have Eyes every time I think of the Raging River...my
too friendly granddaughter. I love you.

It was a
beautiful afternoon Sunday, Father's Day at Quad City Speedway
and stayed that way for the evening race program with a good
crowd and some really great racing. One of the best IITI-Reynold's
Ford Open Wheel Modified feature was a highlight of the program
as the racers ran a clean and fast feature race. First heat
winner, Richie Smith took the early lead with second heat winner,
Jeff Morris coming from ninth place to take over on lap four.
On a fifth lap restart Donovan Lodge took over the point, but
couldn't hold it long as Morris was on a mission. On lap eight
Morris went back to the point with Lodge in tow. Lodge continued
to try but had to settle for second as Morris went on to take
his third Quad City feature of the season. Milo Veloz Jr came
from the last place starting spot to bring home a third place
finish over Jim Willert and Mike Zemo Jr.
Who-hah...Michael finally made it to
a top 5 finish. I hope it is a sign of better times; but whatever,
we must thank Danny for putting in time to weld and rebuild
the chassis these last few weeks. Everybody is still trying
to cure the problem and thanks for the support from other drivers.
Congratulations to Jeff on another victory
and race winners Mike Murphy and Kevin Dickey. Not a bad Father's
Day for many.

The V-8 Modified class had another full
field of cars, but was short Chuck Hanna, whose car was severely
damaged during his heat race. Despite the crash and a few flames
Chuck was okay. Andy Cook used his second row starting spot
to get out in front of the feature early. Once in the lead,
Cook was able to hold off the field to take his second win of
the season. Tim Bradley started second and recorded his best
finish of the season in the same spot. The battle for the third
position was a fierce one all race long that eventually went
to Thad Wilson. Milo Veloz Jr. and Troy Emerick rounded out
the top five. Modified heat race wins went to Cook, Jerry Connors,
and Bob Dominacki.
Michael finishes with a 7th and the car
is looking better on the track. Hopefully, we'll get her dialed
up before the end of the season; at this point top ten looks
good for a finish. Andy took another win in the V8 Modified.
Happy to report Chuck Hanna seemed just fine after his roll
over on the front stretch. Mom still pushes J C Dubil's to keep
your favorite driver safe from harm; and at the same time you
can visit with Late Model winner, Doug Nigh.

First Open Wheel Modified heat winner,
Richie Smith took the lead of the feature, but was later retired
to the pits along with second heat winner, Daron Oberbroeckling
in a seventh lap restart. The restart was actually for Jerry
Durbin who rolled his modified on the front stretch. Jerry rode
back to the pit area on a golf car. It is believed he went to
the hospital for a check up. Donovan Lodge was leading at this
point and from the restart on had to hold off the hard advances
of Jeff Morris. Lodge got his first win of the season with Morris
a strong second. Brandon Durbin was third with Jim Willert fourth
after being involved in the second lap caution with Smith and
Oberbroeckling. Ray Cox Jr took fifth.
Michael finished 10th. Thoughts to Jerry
and the Durbin family. I was taken aback when I heard the news
that Jerry had broken his neck in the feature race. After leaving
on his own accord I thought he amazingly had made it through
without any injury. That's what keeps the knot in my stomach
every week we race. I wish Jerry a quick and full recovery.

The V-8 Modified feature went green,
white, checkered with Doug Crampton taking his first Davenport
win of the year. The race for the lead was three and four-wide
at times. Jim Ross, Matt Stein, and Ray Cox Jr. all took turns
at the front before Crampton took control on lap six. Thad Wilson
started directly behind Crampton in ninth and would finish in
the runner-up spot. John Bull started 12th and finished third.
Jerry Connors was fourth with Stein hanging on to take the final
spot in the top five.
Michael finishes with a 14th. Congratulations
to Doug on another win.

After two cautions before the race got
started Mike Zemo Jr led the first lap of the IITI-Reynold's
Ford Open Wheel Modified feature with Milo Veloz Jr taking over
on lap two. With three laps to go eighth place starter, Jeff
Morris moved out front and the caution flew to leave a two lap
dash for the victory. Morris held on for his second trip to
Quad City Speedway;s victory lane this season. Marty Thompson
move in to take second on the white flag lap and Veloz held
on for third. Brandon Durbin was fourth with eighteenth place
starter, Troy Emerick fifth. Doug Crampton and Durbin were awarded
the heat wins.
Michael would spin out in turns one and
two during the feature and have a tire lose pressure. We ended
with a 15th, but carried away a few pluses when Morris would
draw a 15th for the IITI-Reynold's Ford Open Wheel Modified.
You take the good with the bad. Shall we try something different
for Friday's race?
|
|
6/2/06

|
On a second lap restart Andy Cook charted
out front of the V8 Modified feature and wasn't going to be
denied, as Thad Wilson and Doug Crampton kept the pressure on.
Wilson was able to get up beside Cook a couple of times but
had to settle for second. Crampton was third with John Bull
fourth and Jerry Connors fifth. Heat wins went to Kevin Williams,
Connors and Crampton with Rick Ratliff taking the consi.
The Zemo Motorsports V8-Mod is still
on the verge of a major rebuild of some sort...we're just not
sure what. Michael would end the race with a 12th place finish.
Falling to the back on most occasions is something every driver
finds disheartening.
Andy Cook took a win at both Davenport
and Jackson County...go Andy

One heck of a down pour in my neighborhood
but West Liberty was 90's and sunny. We made the trip to the
WDRL and ran the 1/2 mile modified show. Jim was in the seat
tonight and we tested the engine to see if she would be better
with a chance at proving the 1/2 mile would be more suited for
her.
It was good to have Jim in the car and
get his opinion of what he experienced on the track. He gave
Michael one heck of a compliment by communicating what he is
dealing with on a nightly basis. Papa Bear continues to believe
the few suggested changes that have been discussed since the
beginning of the season must be done.
The heat gave Jim a 5th place finish
and he would start 14th in the feature and finish 14th. He did
a great job with no damage to the car and although I was gun-shy
of the 1/2 mile, Jim took care of our baby. Like Michael, the
car took us tight in the corners and left you wondering where
the front end will take you...Deja Vu of Sunday night's race.
Whenever we go out of town and I tape,
I always have people who know Jim and give compliments on his
history as a driver. No wonder Little Z has always looked to
him as his mentor.
Congratulations to Milo Veloz on his
win in Peoria!

Mike Zemo Jr. led the first lap of the
Open Wheel Modified feature, but then the race's only caution
flew. On the restart Jeff Morris took over the point with Doug
Crampton in tow. As the two of them ran with Morris on the bottom
and Crampton working the top side Crampton kept inching closer
and closer. On the white flag lap Crampton took over the lead
and went on for his first victory of the year. Morris was a
very close second with Zemo third. Brandon Durbin was fourth
with Jim Willert rounding out the top five.
The car still isn't what she was as proved
in the heat race. The feature would show us faltering again
trying to connect the car with the track in the corners. As
the race moved forward Michael managed to work the car with
what she could give him and pulled off his third place finish.
Crampton was living large tonight and the smile on Rita's face
said it all. Congratulations, Crampton crew!!

Milo Veloz Jr. took the lead from the
inside of the second row and drove to his second straight win
at Davenport. Jerry Connors started in the sixth row and would
get to Veloz's bumper, but could not mount a pass for the lead.
Finishing third behind Connors was John Bull with Chuck Hanna
and Bob Dominacki rounding out the top five. Modified heat race
wins went to Tony VonDresky, Bob Dominacki, and Veloz. Chris
Geigle won the semi-feature.
The Z71 made it back to the track in
time for Friday's event. Lots of work going on throughout the
week to meet the accomplishment. Danny, Mike, Jim and Michael
served their time. We may have been on the track but she fell
back a few spots and we finished with 10th.

His eyes told me he was okay, so it was
okay. The car did her job well and took the hard hit, but protected
the driver. The lap belt ripped 1/4 of the way and the chassis
is off no matter where you look. She is down to her bare bones
again and will be in the garage for the next week being rebuilt.
This year we added foam in the cage around Michael's knee area
because he had a similar event happen last year that left him
out of work for a few days. The boys did good because he was
able to walk away. Thank you to the ambulance crew and Kevin.
The most important pieces in racing
are the ones that sometimes the guys just don't have enough
money to purchase or replace; harnesses, lap belts, firesuits,
gloves, shoes, head socks, underwear, etc. Gift certificates
will do the trick and J C Dubil's is just a hop, skip, and a
jump to State Street in Bettendorf. When your driver walks away
from an accident you know it is the best gift you ever gave..
If you like action on the track tonight
was your night. Young Mitch Morris had another win in the B-modified;
so quiet and unassuming off the track, but beware when he is
on it! Aaron Burroughs first night out at QCS and he made it
from starting 21st to take the win.in the street stock. His
car looked sharp and his run was excellent. Good job Aaron.
Jeff Morris won the A-mod, so pops and
son must have had one heck of a night talking racing. Dad and
mom are very proud of their boy.

by Mike McGuire Davenport, IA (May 19,
2006)
After last week's rainout, it was time
to get back to racing at the Davenport Speedway, Friday night.
Once again the car count topped the one hundred mark causing
the drivers to race that much harder for each and every position.
The V-8 Modified class again had a huge field of quality racecars.
Competition was fierce with thirty-five drivers trying to make
the field of twenty starters in the feature. Once the field
was set the 20-lap A-main went almost all twenty laps non-stop.
The only caution flag of the race came after the leader had
taken the white flag, ending the race. Pole sitter Milo Veloz
Jr. took the lead from the drop of the green and led the entire
distance for his first win at Davenport since July 2004. Doug
Crampton moved quickly up to the second position and would finish
in that spot. Donovan Lodge started third and finished third.
Marty Diercks ran a strong race to take fourth with Chris Giegle
hanging on to fifth. Only one of the twenty cars that started
the race, failed to finish on the lead lap. Modified heat race
wins went to Thad Wilson, Jerry Connors, and Rick Ratliff. Matt
Stein won the semi-feature that started 17 cars.
Michael would have to run both heat and
consi to qualify for the feature. Neither race would show a
great performance but we did make the show. Still working on
trying to find the fit for motor, set-up, driver, and track.
Papa Bear and Michael aren't ready to throw in the towel so
we'll move on and try to stay in the top 10. Michael finished
the race with a 16th.

Geneseo's Zemo wins Weedon Weekend
Points Chase
By Dan Tomlin, dtomlin@qconline.com
The last night of the Ronnie Weedon
Memorial Weekend was filled with more stories, more smiles and
more great racing at the Quad City Speedway in East Moline.
Throughout the weekend, there was a points chase in the A-modified
series. Geneseo's Mike Zemo Jr. won that title, despite not
finishing in the top five of either Sunday's race or Friday's
go-round at the Davenport Speedway. After placing in the top
10 in both weekend races, Zemo was called back onto the track
after the 20-lap A-modified feature ended Sunday night. He was
presented with a trophy, and was quite possibly the most shocked
man at the track. "I had no idea they were keeping points,"
Zemo Jr. said. "I wanted to win Friday but just haven't had
very good luck. This is really nice to get, though." Zemo, like
all drivers it seems, had a story about Ronnie that typified
the kind of man Weedon was and what he meant to the sport.
The local racing legend's nearly 60 years
in the sport ended last spring, when a car Weedon was working
on alone in his home garage fell on top of him. "My first time
racing was up in Blue Grass and I went into the wall and wrecked
my car," Zemo said. "Ronnie came up to me and helped me out
and helped me get back out there racing. He always helped me
out and told me good job." Marty Thompson, Mineral, Ill., won
the A-mod feature, although he ran in second place for the entirety
of the race. As the leaders came around turn four chasing the
white flag, leader Jim Willert of Davenport spun out, and instead
of yellow-flagging for one lap, the race was stopped and Thompson
was declared the winner. "I started on the front row, so I was
in good position," Thompson said. "I just drove my race and
things kind of fell into place." Thompson reminisced about Weedon
as well. "It was just a pleasure being around him," Thompson
said. "Being around him and racing him, it was great; he was
a great guy."
For Thompson, Zemo, and the rest of
the drivers, it was obvious that there has been a lot of healing
in a year, but none will forget the legacy of the man they call
"The Godfather of stock car racing in the Midwest."
How did we miss this one. I was on
my way to the pits when I heard Michael's name and wondered
what happened. Michael had left the track when one of the officials
told him to go back. Like his mother, he thought he had done
something wrong. Completely taken off guard, he was presented
with the Weedon Points Chase trophy; and it is beautiful. Those
that loved Ronnie put a lot of thought into this weekend and
the magnificence of the trophy showed. We are humbled to have
a part of the Ronnie Weedon Memorial Weekend to grace our home.

Michael gets his first heat win of the
season and so do both of
Geigle family racing!
Way to go guys.
Feature wasn't as great for the Z71 as
well as some other drivers on the track. Conditions were different
with the Late Model running first and cold weather, but we did
stay in the top 10 ending with a 9th. On the other hand there
were a few that did move forward and were on the mark tonight,
one of them being John
Bull. Emerick Wilson, and Geigle also put on on a
great run. You can't walk away without feeling good despite
your night because Jerry Connors would take the checkered flag.
Very fitting for racing legend, Ronnie Weedon.
DAVENPORT SPEEDWAY Weedon Memorial Brings
Night of High Emotions to Davenport Speedway
by Mike McGuire
Davenport, IA (May 5, 2006) – Despite unusually chilly weather
conditions, a huge crowd and car count were on hand to start
the Ronnie Weedon Memorial Race Weekend, Friday at the Davenport
Speedway. In total, 118 cars made it to the racetrack for an
exciting night of racing. The final race of the evening was
the 20-lap V-8 Modified feature, with a five-foot high trophy
topped with a replica of Ronnie Weedon’s #00 racecar, going
to the winner. From the drop of the green, it was family taking
care of family business. Jerry Connors, Ronnie’s son, made a
bold move on the first lap passing three cars to take the lead.
With family and a huge crowd cheering him on, Connors would
go on to lead all twenty laps and take the victory. Connors
only serious challenge came late in the race from Marty Diercks.
Diercks could get to Connors’ bumper, but could not complete
the pass.
Feature: 1. Jerry Connors; 2. Marty Diercks; 3. Tim Current;
4. Troy Emerick; 5. John Bull; 6. Chris Geigle; 7. Chuck Hanna;
8. Thad Wilson; 9. Mike Zemo Jr; 10. Ray Cox Jr; 11. Matt Stein;
12. Doug Crampton; 13. Donovan Lodge; 14. Jim Sandusky; 15.
Tony VonDresky; 16. Bob Dominacki; 17. John Schultz; 18. Jim
Ross; 19. Scott Mabeus; 20. Denny Stewart.

Sweet. We finished the race!
Started in hot laps with a flat tire
and fuel spraying Michael in the face. Milo gave us a tire and
Mike made adjustments to the carburetor.
When Donna and Cindy showed me the line
up for the heat race I couldn't believe my eyes. Every driver
in Michael's heat I like and are front runners. Ohmigod, this
was going to be a race. Michael started 4th and worked his way
to first but the racing was intense. Michael, Dominacki, and
Cook were all running toe to toe, neck and neck. This race was
three wide on the front stretch for many laps and it brought
a joygasim to Jessica who thinks this is ultimate racing. Eh,
can I say the same while living it? After watching the tape
I can give a thumbs up...and Michael didn't have a scratch on
the car. Now that is good racing! Excellent job; Michael, Bob,
and Andy. Don't think Andy isn't smart. He had enough laps in
the race to be third to Michael and Bob and knew how to use
it to advantage. Andy worked around both of them and took the
window of opportunity and the checkered flag. Michael may have
ended with third but it was our race of the season. I love good
clean racing, and I can't wait
to get photos from Chris Damitz to post. I think you'll see
just how amazing the heat race was.
For the feature, Andy drew front row
and Michael tenth. John Bull ended a long drought at Davenport
by winning the V-8 modified feature. Bull managed to wrestle
away the lead from Andy Cook en route for the win. Cook would
finish second, with Troy Emerick third, Chuck Hanna fourth,
and Thad Wilson fifth. Michael would come in 6th. The car looked
great and I noticed Michael was much better in the corners.
I asked Mike how that was and he informed me his set-up was
different from any year so far to accommodate the new engine.
It worked, and I dare say I'm hoping our season is about to
change.
Jim did a great job in the late model
feature taking second to Darbyshire.
Werner Restoration we thank you for your
support and commitment to Zemo Motorsports.

*%&*!! Season from hell continues.
Michael was running hot laps when the car slowed down and ran
around the outside. The fan, radiator, and water pump are no
more. I'll cross my fingers that our bad luck comes with the
big shows and once the regular points season begins we can start
to climb out of the hole. Leland commented he's had three seasons
from hell, so I'm going to feel fortunate.
$1,000 to win for the A-mods tonight
and it was an interesting race. There are too many people for
me to root for when my head is not behind the camera, but tonight
I was hoping it would be Brandon Durbin's turn. Sometimes the
young guns just need their day and Brandon's paid his dues.
He didn't win...but his time is coming. What's going to happen
when Mikey and Brandon run neck in neck? I'm not too worried
because I think they do a pretty good job of running their lines.
Guss Jr won, Crampton was looking really good, and the list
goes on. If you get to know these A-Mod drivers its really hard
to have a favorite. They really are a great bunch of guys. Once
in awhile you may get a finger or two, but that's just racing.
Team Tent Fort, we have a spot on the
car if you are serious. A special thanks once again to our sponsors
who support us in 2006.

Trying to stay with a positive attitude
but I think this may be our season from hell. My second time
to draw for Michael and I pulled a 59. Hmmm, maybe that is why
it is only my second time.
Michael started 8th in our heat and hadn't
made it a lap when our gear housing broke in half and we dropped
the drive shaft on the track. A repeat of last night; Mike,
Danny, and Michael we kicking butt to try and have the car ready
for consi time. Of course they did, but being the year it is,
the drive shaft was bent enough, and the rear end off 2",
that we just sort of drove around with the car shaking, but
finished the race. No feature for the Zemo's tonight.
Bad season or not, I have to watch our
QC boys run, so I'm there to root them on. What an exciting
race to see. It was well worth the money and the aggravations.
Of course Kelly Shryock took the win, but from start to finish
I had my fingers crossed and mentally pushing my favorite cars
forward for the QC team. Morris, Dominacki, Bull, Cox Jr., were
just a few at one point who had to taste a possible victory
ahead. These guys might not brag about themselves... but I can.
Good runs tonight for all of you!
Oh, and if I could have one more son,
it might just be Mitchell Morris. What a great kid...and a winner
to boot. Congratulation on your B-mod win, Mitchell!

Busy night at Davenport Speedway for
the Midwest Outlaw Modified. About 44 cars entered the V-8 modified
run for a $2,000 purse. Heat race started with Michael in 8th,
moving to 4th, when he found his way into Dominacki and Smith
working for position. Smith went a little to low and cut Michael
off spinning him out. He did finish the heat although we ended
up with a top and bottom A frame bent. Frantically Mike and
Michael began trying to repair before consi time to be back
on the track. Thankfully, Milo came over to assist, Danny showed
up, and we were ready to rock and roll. In the Consi we started
in 6th, moving forward to 3rd with Michael battling for the
2nd spot. He didn't get it, but it didn't matter because he
made the show. Brandon Durbin and Tim Bradley were looking pretty
hot in the 2nd consi. Way to go guys!
Our feature we started 18th, tried to
stay out of any drama, and moved to a 9th finish. The motor
is having a hard time in the corners but picks up on the back
stretch. We've had many competent people tell us we need a different
cam than what we are currently running, so what will we do next?
This business is a thorn in my side, but I'll just have to rely
on Mike and Michael to make an educated decision.
I'm for the home boys so was disappointed
Chuck Hanna couldn't keep the lead in the last few laps of the
race. Chuck held as top dog for pretty much the entire race
and with two cautions late in the night it gave the race winner
(Kelly Shryock) just enough to take the lead in the last 5 laps.
Way to go Chuck! You did an awesome job tonight and we were
in your cheering section.

Jackson County was our destination whether
the rain came or not. Amazingly the down pour held off until
all classes were finished. Michael and Brandon Durbin (in his
new Stealth) got to start the front row in this heat. Before
they had completed one lap Dominacki was on the high side taking
the lead. Michael hung on well since we have never been able
to master the set-up for this track. Michael finished with 3rd
and drew a 10 for the feature which was the last class to run
tonight. Throughout the feature we ran door to door with a pack
of other cars. Not much chance of moving forward tonight and
we ended where we started with a 10th.
Congratulations to Andy Cook! Andy started
8th and moved forward to capture the win in the last 5 laps
of the race. 2005 track champion, Doug Crampton, took 2nd.
Next week we are on to the Mississippi
Outlaw Modified Challenge.

To Davenport with our first test and
tune since Georgia. We got the motor back the night before,
dropped her in, and held our breath. Started the heat in the
4th row and by lap 6 Michael was headed off the track. He stopped
on the back stretch and was pushed home to his pit. Later he
would run the consi and in lap two would come upon a spin-out;
miss it, but his left back caught just enough to get a flat.
At the next caution (lap 4) he came back on the track to get
a few more laps on the car.
Congratulations to winner (and newlywed)
Andy Cook , Chuck Hanna for second, John Bull third and Connors
fourth. Kudos to Tim Bradley who completed the top five.
Congratulations to Craig Crawford on
his first B-mod win. He held the lead like a pro.

I hear races are cancelled for tonight
and rescheduled for tomorrow at 6 p.m.. I'm sure every crew
and driver are excited the racing season has begun. And Nope,
our car isn't ready, the motor isn't put together, or all of
the parts purchased. Papa Mike put all his eggs in one basket
and now he's left in a predicament as 80% of the motor was of
no use from out trip to Oglethorpe. I believe we were told the
oil pan hit something on the track and caused the oil not
to flow through the motor and it blew her up (I didn't see Michael
hit anything, but what do I know?) Our plans were originally
to begin on April 14th, so I think the Zemo's need to say a
few prayers and think hard about the next few weeks. The car
sits lonely in the garage with no one paying much attention
to her. It's the first time since the beginning I see more of
Mike than the car does. We all stay pretty quiet, not saying
too much because our hands are tied and talking about what happened
changes nothing. Yep, Papa Mike has been in an abyss of depression
over his baby, working extra jobs to come up with cash. We'll
try hard to be on the track, but the 14th is only a week away.

Traveled to Oglethorpe
Speedway Park in Savannah Georgia for the
Coca-Cola Young Guns Shoot-Out for modified and late model drivers
23 and under. Practice was to be held on 2/2 but rains came
for the entire day so we spent it sightseeing, eating, and shopping
with Russ, Danny, and Alaina; hoping Friday would clear up and
give us a race day and Michael a chance on the Georgia clay
for half-mile racing. Seminars were early Friday afternoon and
we were off to the track thereafter. Savannah had a ton of rain
the day before but it did not affect us like it would have at
home. The ground is so sandy that the pit area was wet and sloppy
but the track looked good.
The guys prepared the car and Michael
was out on the half-mile for a practice session. Fear is a funny
thing because our trip down we came with tired worn out parts,
borrowed gears and tires from home teams; Ray Cox Jr., Milo
Veloz Jr. and Marty Diercks with dire expectations that an axle
would break, a drive shaft, whatever was old on and her last
leg. Lo and behold, our least concern was our demise on the
track. After only ten laps on our freshened motor, she popped
and our 2500 mile round trip was for not (and endless hours
on the interstate). A sense of quiet fell on our group and disappointment.
This was the first time we blew an engine since our beginning
and the first time Mike was not able to fix our problem and
have us back out for a weekend show. In the past I've been willing
to give up and Mike has always pushed and worked hard to have
us back out there. I had to have it confirmed more than once
that this was a problem he could not fix.. Had we been MUCH
closer to home we would have called Ronnie
to help us out and be back on the track, but the distance
was to great to even contact Ronnie to come to our aid.
In defense of the tracks promoter, Ted,
and office manager, Darlene, they did make the effort to try
and find us a ride or motor. Announcements were made several
times, but to no avail. They took our numbers and said they
would call if an offer was made. An offer of course that we
all knew was a 99% chance of not coming to fruition. Russ and
Danny had a cousin in Atlanta who took the time to call around
and find us a motor. Eventually he would, but it was a short
block and the heads would have had to be transferred from ours
to theirs. We opted not to take the offer and bring our motor
home as she was on her last lap. Oglethorpe was also kind enough
to refund Michael's entry fee and refund Saturday night's pit
costs for the seven of us attending. Considering they didn't
have to, I felt they were generous.
On a quirky note, I was wearing my IITI
pullover while registering in the office and one of the marketing
executives for NASCAR spoke briefly to me and asked if we were
from Iowa. I responded yes, we were from Iowa/Illinois and he
proceeded to identify Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation from the
logo on my pullover. Sponsors, you are noticed.
This was a trip that normally wouldn't
have been made and our disappointment was so great we did not
even attend Saturday night's Young Guns Shoot-Out. Upon arriving
home we did check out the modified winners and found that the
weekend was not what had been publicized since December. I can't
attest to any of the negative statements made because we never
hung around for the race or the media tape event. I do know
first hand that the first, second, and third place finishers
were promised the $500, $250, and $100 pay-outs (if the displayed
Schoenfeld on their quarter panels) since I heard the announcement
as the seminar finished up on Friday.
Negative doesn't get us anywhere, so
we'll move and consider our trip as another life experience.
There was sun, weather close to 70, a view of the ocean, good
driving conditions, and good friends. I wish Dave and Gene could
have been with us, but glad they didn't waste their time missing
work and spending money for a trip that wasn't up to par.
