Quad City Raceway- Finshed 14th with a broken axle.
For Quad City racing fans, seeing Ronnie Weedon's "00"
make its way around the track before the open wheel feature
Sunday night was a sure sign that summer is right around
the corner. The Quad City Raceway in East Moline hosted
the Ronnie Weedon Memorial and the racing was something
of which the former champ would have been proud. Gary
Cook Jr. outlasted a number of restarts and a pesky Ray
Guss Jr. to pick up the win, leading the string of cars
around the track for all 20 laps. Not only did Cook have
to outlast the restarts, he also had to deal with the
lights going out in turn one, making the loose track even
more dicey. "The holes were bad out there, especially
when you couldn't see them, but the fastest line was right
through the holes, so you just had to go for it," said
Cook, who made the nearly two-hour drive from his home
in Deer Creek, just south of Peoria. "With Guss taking
the inside line, I was going just fast enough to stay
ahead of him.'' And as far as the track not being very
tacky? "The looser the better for me," he said. Cook left
with the honorary five-foot trophy with Weedon's open
wheel car on top.
